The first episode of Angels in America is called Millennium Approaches: Bad News. There is certainly bad news because a gay man tests positive for aids and another man gets a job offer from Roy Cohn (a very evil man). Bad news!
I had a bad news week. I am committed to Tuesday mornings newsletters, so today I am reaching you in the form of a list. I love lists.
What I have been enjoying:
Angels in America — Warning: there are some problems with this show in its lacking depiction of Black queerness during the aids epidemic. Belize (a side character) does all the heavy lifting in this aspect. It is, however, a beautiful depiction of love, loss, and grief. There are 6 hour long episodes and I’ve watched it twice.
Going for an Album Listen — Instead of calling it running, I choose an album to listen to and I leave my house and I run or jump or dance or sit on a bench. Less confining. Plus, I can’t run for an entire album length.
Boundaries — Taking time to pay attention to my body and how it feels after I spend time with a person or a place. It’s okay if relationships change. Learning how to let go. In doing this, I am honoring myself.
I was able to hear live music for the first time in a long, long time. Some important lines: “oh sometimes the darkness comes” and “Yeah, I wanna feel so happy that I cry. Yeah, I wanna be the mountain kissed the sky. Yeah, I wanna live forever ‘til I die.”
Good news soon. Love, Jo
